Random Book Reviews #1

Sometimes I am too lazy to write full reviews.

This is what happens.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson – John Green & David Levithan

Two boys, one name. Also romance and friendship and extraordinary musicals.

I enjoyed it – of course I enjoyed it, I love John Green and David Levithan is amazing. However, I didn’t come away from it thinking anything other than that was fun. The writing was gorgeous. The characters were solid (if not a little predictable). Not life-changing, but definitely not bad.

4 shuriken stars.

Paper Towns – John Green

Boy likes girl. Girl disappears. Boy searches for girl. Road trip = fun times.

Loved this one. It grew on me as I thought about it, and I learnt a lot from it. Fun characters, fun times. However do I love it as much as TFIOS? That’s hard.

5 shuriken stars.

Out of the Easy – Ruta Sepetys

Girl’s mum is a prostitute. Also it’s set in the 50’s which makes it extra fun to read.

Loved the setting, loved Josie, loved loved loved the writing. Especially loved Willie. However, some of the characters were a little under-developed with such a short book and I didn’t feel like it came to much conclusion by the end (also, the twists were kind of predictable, though not bad twists at all).

4 1/2 shuriken stars.

Beautiful Creatures – Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

Boy meets girl. Girl has supernatural powers. They fall in love.

Expectations were way too high going in.

Forgot that I was reading a high school paranormal romance until it got to the book and then I went “Oh. Right. This again.” The characters were fun (though the emphasis on Lena being such a special snowflake because she wasn’t a ‘slut’ or ‘fake’ grated on my nerves, and – though I wouldn’t know from any personal experience – there seemed to be a lot of negative southern stereotyping), plot was a little dense and hard to follow, and I admit that I wasn’t paying much attention while reading, but the book held my attention.

3 1/2 shuriken stars.

Mark of Athena – Rick Riordan

The demigods meet, but unfortunately, it’s not like the Avengers.

Kind of disappointing, to be honest. The initial interactions were very mild and friendly, which was a little boring. I was looking forward to some complex characterisation and relationships, but everyone was pretty content with each other. (Except Leo and Frank, whose tension was more annoying than interesting. The love triangle amongst all the other love triangles was just one too many, I’m afraid.) Also, there wasn’t much character development, but I always enjoy seeing my favourite characters, and the plot is beginning to gain pace.

4 shuriken stars.

The House of Hades (UK Cover) – Rick Riordan

(For the American Cover)

The second HoH news of the day!

Quite honestly, I prefer the american cover. This one, while cool, looks very… cheap. I don’t know how else to put it. The other was this lovely artwork with awesome depth and tone to the colour and equally creepy and it just looked really awesome.

However, this cover looks, quite honestly, like someone just photoshopped some random people onto a really cool picture. If it had just been the massive dude with the helmet, and then maybe made the cover a lot darker, a lot creeper, I would have liked it. Still not as much as the American cover, but I still would have liked it.

But the two people underneath with tiny swords and perfect hair and clean clothes look very out of place, and very very fake. I’m very excited, obviously, for what all this means, but I wish they’d gone more of the arty route like the American covers did. The American cover has so much more emotion and depth and fear, whereas this one looks quite posed.

So there is your HoH second piece of fun today!

The House of Hades (Cover) – Rick Riordan

After waiting half an hour for the cover to be revealed on NPR Backseat Bookclub’s Twitter, I finally find the cover. On tumblr, no less. Not an official tumblr, or a book famous tumblr, just a random tumblr with some clever guy/girl who found it.

Which means I really hope this is the official cover, otherwise this is going to be kind of embarrassing.

Well, It’s Percy and Annabeth running through hell. How fun. It’s awesome and epic and everything you’d expect from a Percy Jackson cover!

So, voila!

Sea of Monsters – Trailer

The only link so far that I can find to this in good quality is on tumblr, so here. Let’s hope it doesn’t get taken down and we don’t have to watch the terrible quality ones instead.

Can you get copyright claim on tumblr? I have no idea.

[EDIT: Haha! There’s now a youtube one!]

For some reason, this trailer looks… accurate…

Then again the lightning thief trailer looked accurate, and we all saw how that turned out.

But Annabeth is blonde! And Thalia and Tyson both look great! And Hippocampi! So I can keeping that hope that it will be good.

I don’t know what else to say about it. My brain is kind of dead right now; I really should leave this review to a time when I can think coherently, but you know what, I’m going to publish it anyway, because I’m a rebel and I publish two blog posts within a few minutes of each other, even if the Sea of Monsters trailer has been out for a while, I just completely forgot to review it.

And this isn’t really a review, more like a GO WATCH THE TRAILER, type of thing, so yeah, you should go watch the trailer, and raising awareness that it exists because if you haven’t got a tumblr, there is a high chance that you don’t know about it.

I’ll come back and edit this with some coherent thoughts later, when I can actually think straight.

Mark of Athena (Cover) – Rick Riordan

U mad bros?OMG.

Oh. My. GOD.

I’m leaving it big so that you can see it and all, since most sites have it tiny.

Anyway. LOOK AT IT!!!!!

Ok, to the review.

There’s an owl in the background (the mark of athena), and Jason and Percy are obviously having some epic battle of lightning vs. water and it’s all epic and stuff. Percy is on Blackjack? No idea which horse Jason has.

Why are they fighting? Please leave suggestions, because I have no idea and I really want to know.

So Rick Riordan read out some of the first chapter at his events promoting the last Kane Chronicles book (A series I still need to read), and it ended BEFORE ANNABETH MET PERCY. But now there’s a new one that I think is the entire chapter.

So, in this extract (oh, spoilers) Annabeth sees his face. For like a second. And that’s enough to make me happy for today. I still need the book as badly as before, but this makes up for it a bit.

For those of you who can’t find where to read it, here’s a link.

I’m really hoping this means Annabeth is one of the seven. But I’m really scared that she isn’t. Please, please, please be one of the seven.

Oh, and, for those of you who haven’t seen it, here’s the summary.

“In The Son of Neptune, Percy, Hazel, and Frank met in Camp Jupiter, the Roman equivalent of Camp Halfblood, and traveled to the land beyond the gods to complete a dangerous quest. The third book in the Heroes of Olympus series will unite them with Jason, Piper, and Leo. But they number only six—who will complete the Prophecy of Seven?

The Greek and Roman demigods will have to cooperate in order to defeat the giants released by the Earth Mother, Gaea. Then they will have to sail together to the ancient land—Greece itself—to find the Doors of Death. What exactly are the Doors of Death? Much of the prophesy remains a mystery…

With old friends and new friends joining forces, a marvelous ship, fearsome foes, and an exotic setting, The Mark of Athena promises to be another unforgettable adventure by master storyteller Rick Riordan.”

See, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be someone new that joins the seven, BUT I WANT IT TO BE ANNABETH. It has to be Annabeth. Please make it Annabeth.

Mark of Athena seems like it’s going to be awesome. It’s Rick Riordan, I wouldn’t expect any less of him. No, not awesome. EPIC.

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson)- Rick Riordan

If ANYBODY tells you this is a kids book, DON’T LISTEN TO THEM! Although, it may be true… (but I will NEVER accept that…) Sorry for all the caps… I get a little touchy on this subject… Anyway, going back to the subject. If you are one of those people who have not read this book because your friends/ families/ the internet says that it is a kids book, you have missed out on a lot! Don’t listen to them! Don’t give into peer pressure! If it is a “kids” book, then in my opinion, anyway, it isn’t written in a kids way, it has much more sophisticated writing and the font size of the book is actually YA size! And even if it is a kids book… it doesn’t mean that people who are older, can’t read them… The plot is also AMAZING! And so are the characters; they are teenagers, ok?, so doesn’t that kinda classify the book as a kinda YA novel? (well… that is good enough for me… :D). Also, according to goodreads (one of the best book websites! <– definitely recommended, if you are a big fan of reading!), on the side panel, it’s genre is YA (OK, so I’m avoiding the fact that it also says childrens… but still…!!! :D) SO if anyone ever says that it is a kids book to you STOP THEM RIGHT THERE! OK. I think my ranting is almost over… 😀

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1)So… now that my rant is over… I can properly introduce this book! This is the first book in the Percy Jackson, series, who is the main character! (hint that the series is named after him!), by Rick Riordan. It is the first book of five, and it links to another series, called the Heroes of Olympus! (which is definitely, hopefully, a YA novel!).

PERCY JACKSON IS A DEMIGOD. For those of you who don’t know what a demigod is; it means that the child has one mortal parent and one god parent! At the beginning of the book he finds out that he is a demigod… he finds this out by being chased by weird monsters! fun(!) 😀 Eventually he gets to camp, because of this amazing, one of the best characters in the world, a satyr (note. NOT FAUN, as it is Roman, I think… :D)! When Percy gets to camp, he finds himself accused of stealing Lord Zeus’ favourite weapon, the Lightning Bolt!!! He has ten days to find it, OR a huge war will happen between the gods… , as Percy’s father, is not happy that Zeus is accusing his son…

It can be for any age
Although I refuse to believe that it is a “kids” book, (… because if the book is classified as a “kids” book it means that a lot of people won’t read it because of that)… Sorry… I think I’m ranting again… 😀 OK. I think that this book can be for anyone, kids, teenagers, adults, the elderly, ANYONE! (I may be contradicting myself… , but by my main point about the “kids”, I mean that I just don’t like it classified as a “kids” book, I don’t mean that kids shouldn’t read it…) 😀

The Plot
It was just so original and the writing style was flawless! It was just so full of humour, but the writer knew when to put in serious notes, it was just done PERFECTLY!

The Concept
It’s AMAZING! The idea is just so original!, and I know that this will sound really cliché…  but it really did bring “Greek history to life”! This is how I do well in my Latin lessons… :D, Seriously… This is how I know almost all of the Greek Gods and myths… 😀 It also seemed so real! During the book I was so caught up in it… I was literally waiting for my God’s sign to appear! (Is that weird?) 😀

The Heros
They were just so likeable! Even the evil girl, Clarisse! She was just so funny… :D, They were just so 3D! Amazing!

Remember the main message from this review: THIS BOOK ISN’T JUST FOR KIDS! AND IT CAN NEVER BE CLASSIFIED AS A “KIDS” BOOK (because that means that it can only be for kids…). So, if you read this review, and didn’t just skip to the end (like what I do with books :D), you can probably tell that this is a 5 shuriken star book! I would seriously recommend this book!
